How Disc Golf Leagues Are Played

The Greater Rochester Disc Golf Club (GRDGC) hosts a variety of disc golf leagues throughout the year, providing opportunities for players of all skill levels to compete, improve their game, and enjoy the GRDG community. It’s a great way to meet new people and have a blast while you’re at it.

Below is an overview of the different types of leagues GRDGC offers and how they are played.

Doubles (Best Shot)

Doubles leagues, like our Tuesday Night Random Draw Doubles league, offer a fun and competitive team-based format where two players work together to achieve the lowest score. If you’re interested in a league, doubles leagues are a great place to start, regardless of your skill level. DON’T BE SHY! All you have to do is show up, pay the fee to play, then randomly draw your partner.  But don’t let that bother you because players get handicapped based on their estimated skill level or rating (if you have a PDGA rating).

Format:

  • Two-player teams play a “Best Shot” format, which means both players throw from the tee, choose the best throw, and throw again from that spot.
  • This process continues until the hole is completed.
  • The team with the lowest total score at the end of the round wins.

Scoring and Payouts:

  • Scores are recorded per team, not per individual.
  • Payouts are often based on team placement, with prizes awarded in cash or pro shop vouchers.
  • Most doubles leagues use a handicap system to level the playing field between different skill levels.

Match Play

Match Play is a head-to-head competition where players compete to win individual holes rather than overall stroke totals.

Format:

  • Two or more players on a scorecard compete against each other per round.
  • The player with the lower score on a hole wins that hole.
  • The match continues until one player has won more holes than the remaining number left to play (e.g., if a player is up by three with two holes remaining, they win the match).
  • Ties can either result in a playoff or count as half a point, depending on league rules.

Scoring and Payouts:

  • Points are awarded for match wins, and standings are determined by total match points over the season.
  • Payouts may be distributed at the end of the league season based on total wins and placement.
  • Some leagues use brackets or round-robin formats leading to a final championship match.

Sanctioned Singles

Sanctioned Singles leagues are played according to the official rules set by the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA). These leagues are great for players looking to establish or improve their PDGA rating. If you’ve never played in a sanctioned tournament before, this is a great way to get your feet wet. You will experience tournament play and conditions to prepare you for your first C-Tier tournament.

Format:

  • Players compete individually and play a full round of stroke play.
  • Each player records their score plus the players on your card using the PDGA Scoring App (this is required), and the lowest total strokes for the round determine the winner.
  • PDGA rules and regulations apply, including out-of-bounds, mandatories, and penalties.
  • There is no handicapping. Instead, you play in the Division most suited to your skill level. Learn about divisions here.

Scoring and Payouts:

  • Players receive points and ratings based on their round performance.
  • Sanctioned leagues have divisions based on skill level (e.g., Open, Advanced, Intermediate, etc.).
  • Payouts are typically in cash or merchandise vouchers, depending on the league structure.
